New 3D TV Technology
3D TV technology is based on the principle of stereoscopy, which creates the illusion of depth in an image. This is done by displaying two different images to each eye of the viewer to enhance depth perception in the brain. There is a small deviation in the image displayed to the left and right eye based on their own natural perspective that replicates how images are naturally perceived (binocular vision).
There are three kinds of 3D technology and each method works differently:
Anaglyph Technology
We were first introduced to anaglyph technology, viewed via the red/blue paper glasses, but the 3D effect is not very impressive.
Passive Technology
We were then introduced to polarized or passive technology via IMAX theater 3D movies such as Avatar 3D and Alice in Wonderland 3D. With this technology the glasses are very inexpensive however the effect is still not as powerful as those with active technology.
Active Technology
More recently we now have been introduced to active technology which is becoming the standard in 3D HDTV viewing at home. Since two different images are displayed to each eye, the frame rate is halved. In order to display 3D images effectively on a 3D HDTV the fresh rate needs to be double that of a normal HDTV (60 Hz). 3D HDTVs will have a minimum frame rate of 120 Hz and extend further to 240 Hz or even 480 Hz. 3D HDTV’s can display beautiful 2D images as well however to view 3D you will need active liquid crystal shutter glasses. These glasses are kept in sync with the HDTV using bluetooth, infrared or radio technology and powered by batteries with a battery-life of approximately 80 hours.
