I did a lot of research before I bought a new TV, LCD, DLP, and plasma. I went with this Panasonic Plasma television and I couldn’t possibly be happier. excellent picture, true blacks and whites, no artifacts during high action scenes like football. You dont have to have the TV exactly at eye level to have a good bright picture. Dont think twice or be misled by the old rumours about plasma TVs like I was. The plasma display is good for as long, (if not longer) than a CRT display. Don’t think twice, this is a great TV

After researching LCD and Plasma TVs for almost a year, I finally brought the Panasonic TH-42PX60U Plasma TV (42″). I think I owe a review to fellow buyers, considering how I benefited from other reviews.
My requirements:
I need an HDTV to replace my 27′ CRT TV in my 15 x 18 family room. The main factors that went into the decison making was:
1. Budget – the price should be around $1500
2. Size – I will be viewing the TV from a maximum distance of 8 feet, and may sit as close as 3 feet at its side.
3. I should be able to watch ED TV and Digital TV with reasonable clarity.
After all the research I did, I finally narrowed on the Sharp Aquos 37″ LCD TV. This was a great TV, with a perfect picture, the right colors (better than Vizio), great price (beat Sony) and good styling. But this was just not a big screen TV. I needed a big screen TV, not something little bigger than the 27′ TV I had.
Then I met the Panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma, and brought it home last week. Here is my review:
1. Price – This TV is very reasonably priced (I hate Circuit-city’s return policy).
2. Setting it up (including HD connections) took about 15 min.
3. The first thing I watched was the Jets-Patriot game. Played in rain, usually I would have seen just a blurry screen. But now I was able to see the players, the spectators, the rain and everything else so clearly. The game was played in foggy weather, but the picture wasn’t. HDTV is amazing!
4. View angle – I sit about 6 feet away – picture quality is excellent. Sometimes I sit about 3.5 feet away about 60 degrees off its center. The picture is still very good.
5. No burn in noticed.
6. The picture at the store appeared less bright than LCD – but that was due to its “cinema” setting. I could change it, but I like it best.
7. It has 2 HDMI inputs, and all other stuff the latest TVs have.
8. The audio is pretty good.
9. Analog and digital signals appear very good (I was aghast at the ED TV picture in some TVs, including Sony).
10. Cons – No PIP, and of course it is not 1080p.
I am very happy about this TVs performance. I would definitely recommend it.

The Panasonic TH-42PX60U 42” plasma TV was an excellent choice. Right out the box, the picture was perfect. The price from Amazon was also the best. I’ve been looking for the last 6 months for the best deal!
Also, the shopping experience with Amazon was hassle free.

HDTV picture is as good as any I’ve seen anywhere, regardless of type or price, and at around $2K this is a great price. As the other reviewer stated, it comes preset to the “vivid” setting which is way too bright. You can select standard (perfect) or cinema (a little dark) but both are much better than the vivid setting. Sound is also great for watching regular TV, although most will have a surround system anyway for concerts/movies, etc. Remote is easy to use and set up only takes a few minutes. I’m getting my HD signal through an HD box, so I can’t comment on how the built-in tuners perform. Only assembly required is to conect the stand which takes about 10 minutes. I would buy this TV again in a second.

Like most, I spent a long time agonizing over screen size, resolution, etc… I chose this set for price, brand (I have little brand loyalty, but Panasonic has earned it over 25 years with me), and image. I’m no videophile, so I didn’t engage in comparing all the little stats and numbers. The picture looked good to me, compared to all the other tv’s I checked out over a couple of weeks. The colors seemed more true; the picture was as sharp as any; beautiful, detaile darks, and I plain preferred it. It’s very well built (the back is metal. I like metal), has exhaust fans (They make a faint whirring that is audible at low volume.) and runs very cool. I considered Pioneer, LG, Toshiba, Sony. I fell in love with many of those, but this one still came out on top.
Hooked it up to my Xbox 360 and played a few games, Call of Duty 2, Halo 2 (I don’t currently own sports titles). As a computer gamer (maxed out 1900 X 1200 res. Battlefield 2, Unreal, etc…), I’m senstive to ghosting, and didn’t detect much on the set, certainly nothing that affected my experience or was casually noticeable. I played a few movies: Ronin, Lord of the Rings, Howl’s moving Castle, even Shrek (still thru the 360, too lazy to plug in the DVD player). It all looked fantastic. I bought the tv to watch movies with my wife, and it’s set to do an excellent job for us.
Few closing thoughts: I own a small house with a decent size living room, and 42 inches is plenty, almost too much, though I know vendors want you to buy bigger. This set doesn’t have the highest resolution specs out there. So what? Do your research on the real-life implications of a higher res. tv, you’ll find that you don’t need 1080p to have a great hi-res. experience. Do your research, there are plenty of non-brand tv’s that are getting good user and site reviews. Don’t be hypnotized by specs. Basically, don’t fall for the hype, know what you want and what you want to pay for it. For me, this Panasonic is it, and it seems that I’m not the only one.

I bought this as a house warming gift to myself because I had always wanted one. I love it, I mounted it on my wall so i could save space. The picture is fantastic and the sound is good even with additional speakers. You really can’t go wrong with this TV.

I purchased this TV a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it, and I haven’t even connected HD yet (Comcast to add HD service next week). The analog stations look beautiful, which is very important since most channels don’t come in HD.
Out of the box it’s very bright and the contrast is kicked up to the top so it didn’t look great at first viewing. I found a legitimate website that calibrated this particular television and recorded the settings for optimal picture quality. After changing my settings to match their findings, the picture looks twice as good. Here they are:
Picture Mode: Standard
Picture: +22
Brightness: +8
Color: -1
Tint: -4
Sharpness: -14
Color Temperature: Warm
Big multifunction remote with easy-to-read keys. The on-screen menu is easy to use and you can rename the inputs to one of several options (DVD, Cable, etc.). Plenty of inputs, including 2 HDMI ports, which is unheard of in this price range.
One final note, if you’re sitting close to the TV (6′ or less), I would recommend going with a smaller model than the 42″. I find that when viewing non-HD programming at that short distance everything looks grainy. Once you step back to 8′ or more, everything just pops into place and looks crystal-clear. If your viewing distance is 10′ or more, then you might consider stepping up to a larger model such as the 50″ of the same line (also a beautiful picture).
I did lots of homework and this was by far the best buy!

Let me first be clear: this TV is awesome. And at that price, it’s a steal.
What I am less than pleased with, is how Panasonic attempted to address a 1″ crack that developed in the lower-left corner of the black bezel. When the TV was delivered (less than 3 weeks ago), I carefully inspected the unit and found no discernible physical damage. Fast-forward to 2 days ago: I was sitting closer to the TV and noticed the crack, starting from the outer edge of the bezel to the junction with the glass.
If you’ve just spent more than a thousand dollars on a plasma TV, only to have it develop a serious crack in the frame in under 3 weeks — you would be concerned too.
When I spoke to Panasonic, they informed me that this damage was not covered under warranty. I tried to explain that this crack was a manufacturing defect — a stress fracture — due to the local nature of the fracture. Moreover, I had been extremely careful installing and setting up the television. If this particular set of circumstances is not covered, I don’t know what is. Even after explaining, and escalating the situation, I was told, in less words: Ooops, too bad.
I am honestly struggling to reconcile how awesome this TV is, with how awful the customer service is. While I whole-heartedly recommend this TV to my friends, I have serious reservations about how the extent (or lack thereof) of the warranty. I don’t mean to temper the enthusiasm for this TV — just be careful that it doesn’t develop a problem.

Received this TV in great shape. Eagle white glove shipping is fantastic.
The only decision is whether to pay the extra cable fee for HD because the picture is great even w/out HD. Thanks Amazon for a great deal.

I researched and researched and….. settled for this plasma. AWESOME. I am COMPLETELY satisfied. No need to repeat what others have already said.

UPDATE: There is a 3 inch vertical green stripe (from top to bottom on the right end of the screen) that appeared all of a sudden yesterday (3 weeks of moderate usage). The stripe disappeared after I turned the tv off and turned it on after 15-20 minutes. This morning it appeared again. It disappeared after I changed the channel. Not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions? Thanks.
We bought this TV earlier this week from Circuit City. Absolutely amazing picture and sound quality. The Circuit City sales man wanted to sell a lot of accessories like HDMI cables ($90), Home theatre system ($399), surge protector ($190), extended warranty (~$280 for 3 yrs) etc., but we just got the TV. We have connected it to a regular antenna, and the local channels (most of them) are pretty clear and crisp. We also connected it to the DVD player (regular), and the picture quality is just amazing.
Highly recommend it to all those who are searching for a good HDTV at a reasonable price.

I just called Panasonic.
1-800-211-7562
I asked them about the confusion if this Plasma can actually “DISPLAY” 1080 or not.
Answer: This tv will ACCEPT a 1080 resolution, but will down convert it to DISPLAY in 720p format. This tv only displays a 720p resolution.
Side Note: I asked whats the “real” difference? He said, if you sit any farther than 5ft from the tv, you’ll notice the 1080 will be a bit sharper. Other than that, the TV will look identical. (Thats why the 720′s looks basically the same at BestBuy… You’re standing SO close) lol

Its amazing how the price of these things has dropped. This TV looks fantastic — I also calibrated it using figures I found online and the picture is awesome. Nothing bad to say about this TV, except that I wish the remote was backlit. I bought it on Black Friday for $1199 and couldn’t be happier. I researched several different brands, and this TV, and the Panasonic plasmas in general, seem highly recommended, and rightly so. Tons of bang for the buck.

This is the best value you can get. Awesome picture with 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio. My XBOX 360 looks amazing with 1080i resolution. Definitely worth the money. You would not be disappointed with this TV.

Bought this TV just before Thanksgiving and have no complaints except for the remote being tedious to use to turn on CC. I don’t have access or subscription to HD reception but the picture quality from DISH is far better than anything I’ve seen. I wish I had waited a bit longer to buy as the price came down [elsewhere] to under a $1000 [including shipping] a couple of weeks before Xmas.
